Youth Fishing Derby – Pondside Park

The Queen’s County Branch of the PEI Bait Fishers Group would like to invite everyone to the Youth Fishing Derby!

DATE: Saturday, June 30 (15 years and under)

Sunday, July 1 (Family Day – Children, parents and friends)

TIME: Registration begins at 7:30am on each day, with the derby

commencing at 8:30am

LOCATION: Pondside Park, Keppoch Road, Stratford

Prizes may be given out all day, with trophies and awards presented at the end of the event

SAWIG will be hosting its 3rd annual Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 8 at the Stratford Town Centre! Come out, listen to our projects, activities and programs in 2011, and what we hope to accomplish in 2012!

Town of Stratford and Watershed Group Celebrate Water Week

Town of Stratford: March 23, 2012

The Town of Stratford is celebrating World Water Week, March 19 to 23, with the announcement of capital funding for improvement of the Pondside Park and Moore’s Pond watershed system.

Mayor David Dunphy said “Stratford Town Council has dedicated $7,000 as the first installment in a fund to be used for dredging. The Pondside Park and Moore’s Pond system run through the centre of our community and will serve as a showcase of our community efforts to improve our natural heritage. “ Stratford has also created and delivers a ‘Water School Program’ for Grade Five students at Stratford Elementary, an animated course on water conservation. Mayor Dunphy noted that the Town’s Utility is in the process of developing a water conservation program to encourage residents and businesses in the Town to use water wisely. The program will be rolled out over the coming months.

Volunteers with the local watershed group have planted hundreds of trees and shrubs over the past three years in this watershed and have set a goal of dredging the existing ponds of silt built up over past years. Paul MacCormack, president of the local watershed group said “We are pleased to hear this news from the town; our group has invested time and effort to develop plans for this area as a result of concern expressed at public meetings.” Other partners who have contributed to the Town of Stratford to support education and material costs for this project include the Royal Bank Bluewater Fund and the TD Evergreen Fund as well as the PEI Dept. of Environment and Environment Canada.

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup!

SAWIG is hoping to participate in the 2012 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC)! The watershed coordinator has submitted a request to organize a clean along the coast of Tea Hill Park and beyond. Keep your fingers crossed and watch for details!

We hope everyone is enjoying the chilly winter thus far! The lack of snow is hard on us who snowshoe, ski and sled, but it sure makes driving easier!

We are in the midst of planning our winter events, and look forward to some inspiration and input from those who follow SAWIG. Get those fingers typing and give us some ideas for events!
