The Stratford Area Watershed Improvement Group (SAWIG) encompasses a variety of communities and watersheds. The Stratford Area Watershed is situated on the South Shore Peninsula, across the Hillsborough River from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Stratford is an estimated 21km2 (5230 acres), and approximately 55km2 including Alexandra, Hazelbrook, Pownal, and Fullerton’s Creek South.
The geographic area is land bounded by Fullerton’s Marsh, Hillsborough River, Charlottetown Harbour and Northumberland Strait, extending as far east as the intersection of the 48 Road and the intersection of the Pownal Road with the Trans-Canada Highway.
The increased complexity of the issues SAWIG faces with development, stormwater management, public education, proposed new municipal bylaws regarding a tree policy and enhanced buffer zones has led to the development of a zone-based approach to watershed management.
